Did you notice that our culture equates behaving in a natural way with being childish? If someone laughs hard, weeps openly, dances with joy, does silly things just because they feel like it… They are being childish. And that’s a bad thing, right? Other adults will look down on you. To be childish is to be less than.

You are an adult. You need to have self-control.

But adults like to watch little kids or dogs just being themselves, just existing in an expressive and happy way. And probably, in a secret corner of their soul that they don’t even admit to existing, they envy them.

I’m not saying that we should throw all self-control to the winds. The world would be in chaos if we did. But we should learn how to set it aside just for a few moments sometimes.

We are all so self-important. We feel the need to behave with so much dignity.

But where has the joy gone?
